Kajang is a busy city located in the eastern part of Selangor. As a district capital of Hulu Langat, the city is easily accessible via SILK Expressway. For those who would like to escape from traffic congestion, you may choose to use public transportation – KTM. Kajang station is only six stations away from the main hub, KL Sentral. The station is located approximately 1.5 kilometres from the stadium.
In the last few years, the population in Kajang has grown tremendously thanks to various developments and projects around the city. New townships are being constructed in recent years to encourage more people to move into Kajang. Among some of the dense neighbouring areas are Taman Kajang Perdana, Sungai Chua, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Bandar Mahkota, Bandar Sungai Long and Taman Prima Saujana. Besides that, modern and luxury housing units were also built in the city such as Country Heights, Jade Hills, Twin Palms and Prima Paramount which are catered to upper working class.
Generally, majority of residents in Kajang are Malays – accounts up to 51 percent, while approximately 38 percent are Chinese and the remaining percentages are Indians and other ethnic groups. Based on population census provided by Kajang Municipal Council, the city has an estimated population of over 560,000 in 2003.
And similar to any other cities or towns, Kajang has basic facilities and infrastructures such as schools, higher learning institutions, hospitals, police station and religious places. Among some of the schools located within Kajang are SMJK (C) Yu Hua, SJK (T) Kajang, SMK Tinggi Kajang, SK Bukit Tinggi, SMK Kajang Utama and plenty more. Besides public schools, students can also enroll in Australian International School Malaysia.
Kajang is a popular city among tertiary students since several higher learning institutions are located there such as New Era College, Tunku Abdul Rahman University, Malaysia National University (UKM), Nursing and Health Masterskill College, Malaysian Kuala Lumpur University and Times Academy.
On another note, some of the notable landmarks in Kajang are the stadium and the mosque. Stadium Kajang is ideally located in the centre of the town. Locals particularly youths tend to hang out and spend time with their friends here. In the past, the stadium has been used as a venue for soccer events attracting over 5,000 people nationwide.
Another prominent landmark in Kajang is the mosque. The bright yellow facade is easily distinguishable from afar. A local wealthy tycoon, Datuk Ujang Bagong donated money to get the mosque painted and renovated for the comfort of other prayers. There are always Islamic activities going on in the mosque during nighttime.
Residents in Kajang do not have to travel far to seek medical care for there is a government-funded hospital situated in the eastern part of the town. This 306-bed Kajang Hospital was established in 1889. Decades ago, there were only 250 beds in the hospital. The hospital has upgraded the medical services for all the patients as a hemodialysis unit was established in 2000.
